Corrections
When we get it wrong, we say so. Here is how we correct errors and handle requests for rectification.
To request a correction: write to [email protected] with a link to the piece, the fact you believe is wrong and, if you can, a source that supports it.
Our commitment
A newspaper's credibility does not rest on never being wrong, but on how it responds when it is. We do not quietly erase mistakes: we correct them and leave a record.
How we handle each case
| Type of error | What we do |
|---|---|
| Typo with no effect on meaning | We fix it directly. |
| Error of fact (figure, name, date, quote) | We fix it and add a dated note at the end of the piece. |
| Serious error undermining the story | We fix the piece, flag it prominently and, where appropriate, publish a separate clarification. |
| Piece without sufficient basis | We withdraw it and record the withdrawal and the reason. |
Corrections apply to both the English and Spanish versions, and we update the piece's modification date.
What happens to your request
- We review the piece against its sources and any documents you provide.
- If there is an error, we correct it according to the table above.
- We reply with what we have decided and why.
Right of rectification
Under Spanish Organic Law 2/1984, any person or company may request rectification of published information about them that they consider inaccurate and whose disclosure could harm them. The request must:
- Be sent within seven calendar days of publication.
- Be limited to the facts, at a length similar to the original information.
- Identify who signs it and prove their authority if acting for someone else.
If it meets these requirements, we will publish it in full within three days, with prominence similar to the information being rectified.
